I enclose also copies of a letter dated 22nd
April, 1926, from Mr. Claxton, Director, covering letters from Messrs. Jeffries and Evans, asking that a revision of the scales may be considered in connection with the 1927
Estimates.

I have given careful consideration to these representations and have come to the conclusion that the existing scales are not well suited to a small specialized department like the Royal Observatory, where subordinate officers may remain for many years without promotion so that what may be a good salary for a young officer become E inadequate later on.
Both Mr. Jeffries and Mr. Evans, the present assistants, have been in their respective posts since 1912, and both have been drawing the maxima of their posts since
1st January, 1923.

I am unable to recommend any increase in the salary of the Director, as I do not consider that the work
The of the post justifies a higher scale than the present. Chief and First Assistants have similar duties and responsibil- ities, and they might therefore I think be placed on the same scale. I recommend the following revised scales for the Department, and subject to your approval, I have made provision accordingly in the draft Estimates for 1927:-
Director
£750 to £900 by £25 annually.
Chief Assistant
First Assistant
£400 to £700 by £20 annually.
Mr. C. W. Jeffries, the Chief Assistant, to draw £700, and
Mr. B. Evans the First Assistant to draw £560 from the 1st
January, 1927.
